Communicative Approach TESOL: Teaching Culture – Part I

Teaching culture is an integral part of teaching a language.  They are intricately woven together.  In order to communicate clearly and effectively in any language, learners must have knowledge of the language’s vocabulary, grammar, when and how to use them appropriately (function), and the corresponding body language.  Students also need to be able to read and make accurate assumptions about the other person’s meaning by evaluating his/her verbal and non-verbal cues.  When one is gauging the appropriateness of language and behaviour, culture must be considered.  It would be impossible to explain, for example, how to talk to a potential employer without talking about both the language and its culture.

Ontesol in 2012

2011 has been a great year for ESL teachers. Over 300,000 TESOL graduates are currently teaching English worldwide! Even during the never-ending recession, there are plenty of jobs available and schools are offering better packages than ever.

Stricter requirements for TESOL certification are motivating teachers to take a reputable TESOL course. As a result, ESL teachers are enjoying their career more than ever.

Our graduates know that TESOL is not just about certification. Lesson planning  is about being prepared, unleashing your creativity, and becoming better communicators of important life values.

It’s been almost a decade since Coventry House International launched Ontesol and we are proud to see how much we have grown since 2003. Nine years ago it was unthinkable for an online TESOL institute to surpass CELTA in quality. Through hard work and dedication, Ontesol’s 250-hour TESOL Diploma has become one of the most popular courses in Canada and the World.

Ontesol is always looking to offer more than the features required by our accrediting organizations. This year we created more resources, hired more tutors, expanded our free job placement service, and established more partnerships worldwide than ever.

Next year we will continue to push our limits with our trainees, their students, and the whole ESL industry in mind.

Happy 2012!

Difference Between UK, Canada, US TESOL Courses?

Good TESOL / TEFL / TESL courses are standard across the world. They cover grammar, phonology, and methodology.  Some courses include a Practicum module, others offer the option to take it after the TESOL course, and others do not offer this module at all.

What Are TESL Canada Standards?

TESL Canada is the leading accrediting TESL organization in Canada and they recognize teacher training courses at three different levels:

Standard 1

Courses that are recognized by TESL Canada at their Professional Standard 1 require a minimum if 120 hours (including Practicum). Courses at this level meet the minimum standard for teaching English in Canada at the entry-level.

Standard 2

TESL Canada Professional Standard 2 consists of advanced TESOL courses with a minimum of 250 hours and a 20-hour Practicum module. Teaching experience or prior TESOL certification is not necessary to pursue this level of accreditation.

The main reasons for pursuing TESL Canada Standard 2 certification are that trainees get more training than with the standard 4-week course, greater job opportunities in the long term, and the convenience of online education because most advanced 250-hour  programs are offered online.

Why are online courses more popular for Standard 2 certification? It is more convenient to complete an advance course on a part-time basis because trainees are not required to travel and they can continue to work or study something else. OnTESOL’s 250-hour TESOL Diploma program takes anywhere between two and eight 8 months to complete, so trainees can study at their own pace in order to learn better and meet other commitments.

Those who hold TESL Canada Professional Standard 2 are better positioned when applying for jobs anywhere in the world or when applying to a Masters program.

Standard 3

TESL Canada Professional Standard 3 is a Masters program in Applied Linguistics or TESOL and a Practicum module. There isn’t any other accrediting institution in the world that reaches the level of an MA program! Candidates are required to have an advanced TESOL/TEFL qualification and a minimum of 2 years of teaching experience.

Where Are The Best TEFL Jobs?

If you are new to the world of TEFL, South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, parts of China, Costa Rica, Mexico, and Chile offer the best opportunities for entry-level teachers. A university degree and a TESOL certificate of at least 100 hours is required. Europe is off limits to those who do not have a EU passport, but the best entry-level positions are found in France, Italy, Spain, Poland, and Germany.

Each country offers a completely different experience, but South Korea is the top destination for those who wish to save some money. EPIK is the largest employer as it is a government funded program that hires native-speakers for teaching at public schools. Pay starts at $1,800/month plus accommodation, bonuses, and other benefits. An internationally recognized 100-hour TESOL certificate automatically qualifies applicants for a hire pay level, starting at $2,100/month.

Difference Between TEFL Online and On-site?

In essence, there shouldn’t be any difference between online and on-site courses. Thanks to current technologies, it is possible to deliver top TESOL/TEFL training online without lowering the quality of the course. TESL Canada has been accepting online TESOL programs (many of which are offered by the most reputable Canadian universities) for almost a decade, CELTA is about to launch its own online TEFL course, and both Cambridge and Trinity College of London have been offering a large online component for their diploma courses, DELTA and Trinity DipTESOL respectively.

The main problem with most online TESOL courses is not the delivery mode, but the content of the course and the level of the assignments. Few online schools have experience delivering advanced programs such as TESL Canada, Trinity CertTESOL, or CELTA. Their courses are quick and easy and they offer poor training in lesson planning, which is the most essential component of a TESOL or TEFL course.

Coventry House International is the first Trinity CertTESOL center in North America and offers quality online TESOL courses. You can choose from the 100-hour TESOL certificate program or the advanced 250-hour TESOL Diploma, which is recognized by TESL Canada Professional Standard 2 after a 20-hour Practicum is completed and is more advanced than any 5-week on-site TESOL course.

Does The 100-Hour TESOL Count Towards The 250-Hour One?

Ontesol’s 100-hour TESOL certificate covers some of the material from the TESOL Diploma, but the assignments and exams of the 250-hour course are more difficult, so trainees must take the full course when they upgrade their credentials with us. A $100 discount applies to those who have graduated from Ontesol’s 100-hour TESOL course.
