The benefits of using authentic material in the TESOL classroom are many. They generate interest, they are certainly more varied in range than the material embedded in textbooks, they can be extremely practical, they can be fun and they can be very current. Especially for teachers who are not in an English-speaking country, authentic material are an excellent way to bring the English-speaking world into the classroom. In this series, different specific ways of using authentic materials will be covered. This inaugural issue covers some tips for using (non-musical) radio or podcasts in the classroom.

New teachers will find that ESL students tend to rely heavily on dictionaries and translators when they are presented with reading material, so they often find themselves giving advice such as “You don’t have to understand every word to understand the reading, try not to look up every word in your dictionary.” Although students may reluctantly follow this advice in the classroom, most will continue to rely on dictionaries or translators when reading outside of class. This is because many L2 readers tend to draw heavily on bottom-up, or data driven reading strategies. They believe that successful reading comprehension hinges solely on their ability to understand the written text in front of them.
South Korea has one of the most stable economies in the world and is home to some of the biggest corporations, such as Samsung and Hyundai.
Cities host a variety of beautiful ancient buildings and gates as well as some of the most modern buildings. South Korea is also home to some of the most beautiful national parks in the world and the government has been very active at renovating urban centres by filling empty spaces with greenery.
Their success is based on a mixed economy where businesses take care of production and government invests in essential services such as Eco-projects and education. One of these government-funded programs is EPIK, which hires 1,100 ESL teachers every semester and pays one of the most competitive packages in all of East Asia. ESL teachers take home approximately $2,000/month and the package also includes accommodation, health insurance, bonuses, and more. A 100-hour online TESOL certificate automatically qualifies teachers for a higher pay level, starting at 2.0 million won per month in some areas and 2.1 million in other.

The price of an expensive on-site course is not indicative of quality. Online TESOL courses can be offered for a much lower tuition fee because the need to rent expensive downtown classrooms is eliminated. Furthermore, online education provides great economies of scale because schools have a global reach. While online courses provide a private tutor to every trainee, quality on-site TESOL courses cannot accept more than 15 students. As TESL Canada and CELTA recognize some online TESOL courses, this method of instruction is the way of the future.
The Practicum is a separate module and is not required for OnTESOL’s 100-hour TESOL certificate or 250-hour TESOL Diploma. The Practicum, however, is necessary for applying to TESL Canada Professional Standard 2 certification (250-hour + Practicum). There isn’t a deadline for completing the Practicum after the online TESOL course, so trainees can wait until they get a job to take it free of charge at their employer’s premises. Although the Practicum is not required by many employers, it is highly recommended because the 10 hours of class observation and 10 hours of teaching experience provide confidence and feedback to new teachers.
In order to obtain a work permit in another country, a university degree is required unless you are a citizen of that country. The degree does not have to be on education, TESOL, or anything related to teaching. In fact, most TESOL trainees have degrees in business, history, and art.
Having a degree in an unrelated area does not indicate that the applicant can teach English. The reason immigration offices require a university degree is to avoid young backpackers who are usually irresponsible with their students, their contracts, and used wreak havoc when there were less restrictions. Gone are the days when any native-speaker could move to another country and find a job teaching English. Language institutes have established a professional industry in which a degree and an internationally recognized TESOL certification are required.
In essence, there shouldn’t be any difference between online and on-site courses. Thanks to current technologies, it is possible to deliver top TESOL/TEFL training online without lowering the quality of the course. TESL Canada has been accepting online TESOL programs (many of which are offered by the most reputable Canadian universities) for almost a decade, CELTA is about to launch its own online TEFL course, and both Cambridge and Trinity College of London have been offering a large online component for their diploma courses, DELTA and Trinity DipTESOL respectively.
The main problem with most online TESOL courses is not the delivery mode, but the content of the course and the level of the assignments. Few online schools have experience delivering advanced programs such as TESL Canada, Trinity CertTESOL, or CELTA. Their courses are quick and easy and they offer poor training in lesson planning, which is the most essential component of a TESOL or TEFL course.
Coventry House International is the first Trinity CertTESOL center in North America and offers quality online TESOL courses. You can choose from the 100-hour TESOL certificate program or the advanced 250-hour TESOL Diploma, which is recognized by TESL Canada Professional Standard 2 after a 20-hour Practicum is completed and is more advanced than any 5-week on-site TESOL course.
Logically, the main reason for taking a reputable TESOL course is qualifying for the best teaching positions. In the past decade, schools have become stricter when it comes to TESOL certification. Nowadays, the minimum requirement for an entry-level job is a 100-hour TESOL certificate, while the best schools ask for an advanced TESOL or TEFL certificate of at least 120 hours of advanced training and a practicum module, such as TESL Canada, Trinity CertTESOL, or CELTA.
Some schools do not ask for any kind of certification, but you must consider that learning English is not a luxury. People make a significant investment of time and money to improve their lives, so those who are interested in earning a living while traveling should seriously consider their responsibility towards their students and take a reputable TESOL or TEFL course.
An advanced program such as Ontesol’s 250-hour TESOL Diploma, which is recognized by TESL Canada Professional Standard 2 (Practicum required) and ACTDEC UK Level 3, is highly recommended. This program covers more than an on-site Trinity or CELTA course after a 20-hour Practicum is completed and costs half as much because of the convenience provided by online education.
Ontesol also offers the best 100-hour TESOL course in the industry for those who are interested in taking a standard program without spending a fortune.
